The university of Leuven (KU Leuven) is one of the oldest universities in Europe, with over 50,000 students and more than 10,000 staff members, active on 15 campuses across Flanders. The university mission is to excel in academic education and research and to provide distinguished service to the society.

The faculties of Bioscience Engineering, Engineering Science and Engineering technology provide academic education for more than 12,500 engineering students. Within the Master in Materials Engineering, an option on Polymer and Composite Materials is offered; within the Master in Mechanical Engineering, a module on Aero and Space Engineering is of-fered.

KU Leuven is a leading European research university with a research turnover of 418 M€ in 2013 and more than 4,500 PhD students. Several research departments and campuses are involved in the research on polymer composites. More than 50 researchers are active in composites-related research.

KU Leuven Research and Development focuses on technology transfer and research col-laboration with industrial partners; more than 100 spin-off companies were created.

Competence Description

The academic staff is experienced in education and training. Upon the request of compa-nies, or within projects, dedicated workshops and training programmes on composites can be organized, ranging from basics to dedicated topics, linked to the research activities.

More than 50 researchers are active in the field of polymer composites, mostly but not ex-clusively in the department of Materials Engineering. The research ranges from very fun-damental studies to very applied and/or oriented projects, funded by different sources. Re-search is focused on the following directions: 

  • Composites on meso-macro structure/size level
  • Composites on micro-nano structure/size level
  • Natural fibres and bio-based composites
  • Processing and application development
  • Physical Chemistry of Composites

In each of these areas, at least one post-doc and five doctoral or master’s students are working, providing a “critical mass” for efficient research and fruitful interactions. The research areas are highly intertwined. This approach enables also a downstream integra-tion, as in each area fundamental and materials oriented research is combined with pro-cessing optimisation, and the evaluation of end-use properties, up to product development. The research is both experiment and model based, and is often performed in collaboration with industry.
